March Greatness

Dedication never fails…

KYCC’s graffiti crews were recognized at a special Board of Public Works meeting held at Council President Wesson’s office. The Office of Community Beautification gave a presentation on the tremendous work our environmental staff do every day of the week.

We are proud of the work you do. Congratulations for the well deserved recognition!

VITA powering through, as always!

KYCC LITC vs. IRS

“On February 12, 2018, the KYCC Low Income Taxpayer Clinic won its first US Tax Court case against the IRS. It involved a taxpayer who was denied her education tax credit of $1000 for 2015 because the taxpayer did not technically have her ITIN by the due date of the tax return (and that was required by recent legislation called the PATH Act). With the help of pro bono attorneys from Agostino & Associates in New Jersey, we were able to put together a strong pre-trial memorandum and were ready to go to court. Once at court, however, the IRS attorney conceded everything to the taxpayer. If the case would have gone to trial, we may have been able to set new precedent regarding the PATH Act because it is such new legislation without any previous cases that have litigated this very issue. For now, the Clinic will continue to look for important cases to litigate in the US Tax Court and help taxpayers through the maze of dealing with the IRS.”  –Joanne Kim, Managing Attorney

Congratulations to our honorable LITC team!

April is Stress Awareness Month

Glesteree “G” Blades

You’re sitting in traffic, late for an important meeting, watching the minutes tick away. Your hypothalamus, a tiny control tower in your brain, decides to send out the order: Send in the stress hormones! These stress hormones are the same ones that trigger your body’s “fight or flight” response. Your heart races, your breath quickens, and your muscles ready for action. This response was designed to protect your body in an emergency by preparing you to react quickly. But when the stress response keeps firing, day after day, it could put your health at serious risk.

Stress is a natural physical and mental reaction to life experiences. Everyone expresses stress from time to time. Your body responds to stress by releasing hormones that increase your heart and breathing rates and ready your muscles to respond.

Yet if your stress response doesn’t stop firing, and these stress levels stay elevated far longer than is necessary for survival, it can take a toll on your health. Chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms and affect your overall well-being. Symptoms of chronic stress include:

Irritability

Anxiety

Depression

Headaches

Insomnia

Now that you know some of the symptoms… please take steps to take better care of yourself and manage your stress more effectively!

Chip & Dip Day RECAP:

Be on the lookout for more fun to come!

Miguel’s Voice

Did you know…

All of our copiers have prepaid maintenance contracts?

Each copier has a sticker with the name and phone number of the service company.

We know that having fast, clean copies and scans are important to your work.

If your copies are too dark, your scans are crooked, the waste toner light is blinking or the paper keeps getting jammed, you can either put it on the maintenance list or for faster service, you can call the vendor directly. Just say you’re from KYCC!

Now you know!

-Miguel

From Seth’s Blog:

Waiting for all the facts

“I’m just going to wait until all the facts are in…”

All of the facts are never in. We don’t have all the facts on the sinking of the Titanic, on the efficacy of social media or on whether dogs make good house pets.

The real question isn’t whether you have all the facts. The real question is, “do I know enough to make a useful decision?” (and no decision is still a decision).

If you don’t, then the follow up question is, “What would I need to know, what fact would I need to see, before I take action?”

If you can’t answer that, then you’re not actually waiting for all the facts to come in.
