Senate Bill 793 — Ban on Flavored Tobacco Products in CA
On Aug. 28, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 793 (SB 793) into law, prohibiting retailers from selling or possessing flavored tobacco products with the intent to sell. Much of KYCC Prevention Education (PE) Unit’s work supports local policy efforts to protect the public health of our communities. Read more…

October is Domestic Violence Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981 observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
The purpose of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is to mourn victims, celebrate survivors, and network for change.

October 12 – Indigenous People’s Day
Indigenous or Aboriginal people have that distinction because they were living on their lands before settlers came from elsewhere; they are the descendants—according to one definition—of those who inhabited a country or a geographical region at the time when people of different cultures or ethnic origins arrived. President Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress made October 12 a national holiday three years later. In 1972 President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making the official date of the holiday the second Monday in October.
October 16 – Bosses’ Day
The origin of Bosses Day dates back to 1958. Patricia Bays Haroski, an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Illinois, registered it with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Haroski chose the date because it was her father’s birthday. Who was her boss? ….her father.

October 22 – National Nut Day
This nutty day was created by the Liberation Foods Company, the United Kingdom’s fair trade, farmer owned company. It is not known when it was first celebrated. It appears to have been in existence since the early 2000’s.
Interestingly, it was created as a “National” day in the United Kingdom. Yet, those who are promoting it, are encouraging it to be “celebrated around the world”. So, why didn’t they declare it as a “World” or “International” day!? Some questions we will never know the answer to.
All sites will have a variety of nuts (almonds, cashews, peanuts) delivered.

Did you know…
E-waste is a serious environmental problem, from toxic chemicals and heavy metals leaching into soils in landfills?
Instead of throwing your e-waste in the trash, you should collect it and take it to an e-waste disposal site or e-waste event or…KYCC!
This is the perfect time to get rid of non-working or obsolete electronic items like computers, monitors, televisions, fax machines, telephones, CD players (bring it Boomers!), radios, microwaves, etc.
KYCC is going to schedule an e-waste pick up this month so now is your chance to go Marie Kondo on your storage space in an earth-friendly way.
You have until October 15, 2020, to drop off your unwanted items to our KYCC Wilton site.

“Taking” lessons
What an accurate and horrible term.
It’s hard to imagine that most people would look forward to taking lessons. In the piano or arithmetic or anything else.
You take medicine. You take your punishment. It’s unwanted but grudgingly accepted.
The term gives away the intent behind it.
Learning is different. Learning is something we get to do, it’s a dance, an embrace, a chance to turn on some lights.
