DEI Corner: Global Diversity Awareness Month

Happy Global Diversity Awareness Month! Providing services in one of the most racially and ethnically diverse counties in the second most diverse state, it is important to acknowledge, understand, and honor our differences (census.gov).

The history of Global Diversity Awareness Month is elusive, but it’s been linked to the United Nations General Assembly adopting The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948 (nationaltoday.com). More on that when December 10th comes around, which is the anniversary of UDHR and celebrated as International Human Rights Day!

Taking place in October, Global Diversity Awareness Month provides time to celebrate our differences, such as ability, culture, ethnicity, heritage, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.  When we reflect on how our differences make us unique, we are able to experience and enjoy culture and expand our minds (vantagecircle.com). Moreover, diversity helps us to work in a global society, increases our knowledge, prepares us for career success, enhances social development, and enhances self-awareness (nationaltoday.com).

Here are some ways we can celebrate Global Diversity Awareness Month from nationaltoday.com

1. Connect with people: Make a friend on the other side of the world – Modern technology allows us to learn almost anything we want to learn about people’s lives through social media, and other online channels.

2. Learn about another culture: If you can’t experience the ‘real thing’ through travel or another person, indulge in listening to international music, or watching international movies (‘Nollywood’, or Nigeria’s film industry, produces approximately 50 new movies per week).

3. Make an effort to stay informed: Keeping up with global happenings and events may be emotionally tragic at times, but it can also be extremely informative in daily life, as we are all connected in one form or another.

Did you know…

Only 17.4% of e-waste is known to be collected and properly recycled?

Help us get to 17.5% by bringing in your old electronics!

We’ve contracted with an e-waste recycler who will take computers, monitors, televisions, phones, fax machines, copiers, cd players, microwaves, etc.

If it plugs-in and no longer works, bring it to work and recycle it in an earth-friendly way.

You have until October 13, 2022, to drop off unwanted items at our KYCC KOA Suite 300 site.

The e-waste recycler will be here the following day.

Now you know!

The way it’s done

Some people say, “we’re not changing it, because this is the way it’s done.”

And some people say, “the way it’s done isn’t good enough, let’s make it better.”

In a given situation, you might encounter one or the other type of response. In fact, each of us might adopt one posture or the other.

It’s not “who”, it’s “what do they believe.”

It’s worth thinking about the beliefs of the person you’re talking to before you try to suggest making things better.

And it will help you understand the feedback someone else is giving you about your work as well.
