Eye Exam Month

EYE MYTHS

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL EYE EXAM MONTH

1.   Take the exam

An eye exam usually takes about 20-30 minutes.

2.   Encourage others to do the same

Urge your loved ones to get their eyes checked to ensure their healthy vision, too.  If you are a parent, getting your kid’s eyes examined can help them in school.

3.   Make sure you have the right prescription

Your eyes change over time. Adjusting your prescription may be necessary to reduce eyestrain, optimize performance, and make your vision as clear as can be.

Most KYCC staff have Kaiser Permanente as their health insurance carrier.  Kaiser offers free vision screenings/eye examinations to you as a member and no referral from your primary care provider is required.  Here is the link to set up an appointment.

DEI Corner: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9th is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! This was pronounced by the United Nations in December 1994 to commemorate the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.

Here are some resources that you can check out to help celebrate Indigenous People this August:

Mapping Indigenous LA:

Mapping Indigenous Los Angeles aims to uncover and highlight the multiple layers of indigenous Los Angeles through a storymapping project with youth, community leaders, and elders from indigenous communities throughout the city. The website resulting from this collaborative research makes visible the rich Indigenous identities and histories that are often hidden within other racial formations yet deeply embedded in the history of Los Angeles.

On August 9, 2021, Cultural Survival shared a list of different resources and ways to celebrate and uplift Indigenous Peoples on this special day. While many of the items on the list apply to last year specifically, the list does include important resources and ideas.

Did you know…

…you have the power to improve your work site?

If you see something that needs fixing or replacing, you can let Miguel and Porfirio know.

We use The List to track and prioritize our work (it’s also on the wiki).

When you open it, select the tab for your location, add your request to the bottom, and leave the rest to us!

Now you know!

Dependable

This is a distinct skill.

Something can be dependable without being extraordinary, rare or even reasonably priced.

It’s also one of the easiest skills to acquire, and often quite valuable if you stick with it.

While sticking with being dependable is sort of redundant, it’s also essential.
