National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month

July is Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month

Here are some tips of what you can do when you have a flat tire, run out of gas, or have mechanical problems.

  1. Your top priority is getting out of traffic while staying in the safety of your vehicle.
  2. Get over to the right, as far as possible.
  3. If you are on a multi-lane highway, the central median or left-side breakdown lane is not ideal, so at the first sign of any trouble, start merging right to the shoulder.
  4. Stay in your car.  Never get out in traffic or an otherwise dangerous area, even to watch for the arrival of help.
  5. Call for help using your cell phone inside of your car.
  6. Keep your windows rolled up, debris and rocks/gravel can come inside your vehicle.
  7. If you must change tire yourself, drive as far as you can to an area that’s well away from traffic.
  8. Practice changing a tire at home. You’ll be in a safe location and can comfortably refer to instructions and videos as you go.
  9. Keep a roadside safety kit in your vehicle.  That typically includes a first aid kit, flashlight, gloves and a blanket, jumper cables for a dead battery, and safety triangles to warn other motorists.  Many people also include a canned tire inflator, heavy-duty rope, and/or flares.
  10. Place the safety triangle or flare about 10-20 feet behind your vehicle.  DO NOT put safety triangles or flares in the traffic lane.

Stay safe on the road.

Did you know?

Less than a quarter of all household electronics gets recycled?

These end up in landfills or incinerators that pollute our groundwater and air.

Be part of the solution by dropping your e-waste off at Wilton before July 27th!

We’ve scheduled a company to take away any electronics that take batteries or need to be plugged in.

Working, not working and never worked items are welcome; computers, monitors, televisions, fax machines, printers, telephones, cd players (don’t judge), radios, microwaves, etc.

Now you know!

Two kinds of good cooks

One is very skilled at following the recipe. Quality control, consistency and diligence.

The other understands how the recipe works, sees patterns and opportunities and changes the recipe to fit the problem to be solved. It’s about metaphor in addition to process.

Both are useful.

If you think this is a post about cooking, you might be the first kind of cook.
